Ophthalmic Product R&D Manager

The Position
Provides technical expertise to the design and development of new ophthalmic medical device product(s). Investigates/evaluates existing technology and advises research and development, regulatory affairs, and reliability engineering to ensure appropriate process development under the best possible conditions. Develops new concepts from initial design to market release. Conducts feasibility studies of the design to determine ability to function as intended. Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development. Maintains visibility of the ophthalmic product industry landscape and determines potential application for emerging products.
Functional/Business Knowledge
Possesses expert knowledge of leading ophthalmic lens technical areas: digital free form, vacuum coating. lens product, dip coating product, en masse and lens material, electrical engineering/ circuitry.
Optical lens product development expert, understands all dimensions of lens technology.
Externally recognized as an expert in the ophthalmic optics technical field.
Experience transferring products from early stage development through manufacturing launch.
High level of understanding of solving unique problems where analysis requires an in-depth evaluation and may impact future concepts or technologies.

Serves as key member of the Ophthalmic Product Team (OPT), consulting with Manager and VP to strategize
and execute product development.
Own the lens R&D and technology database and roadmap within the product team to drive commercialization on the Zenni platform.
Drive R&D product development skillfully with command of tactics in manufacturing/ R&D processes.
Lead Technology Development projects and multi-disciplinary teams (both internal and external) to identify, quantify & drive down risks and demonstrate bench, clinical and commercial feasibility for next generation technologies.
Provide technical and engineering leadership.
Work with R&D engineers to help drive testability into the product.
Develop test plans, protocols and reports to document concept and feasibility activities.
Executes test protocols, test cases, test scripts and scenarios and log/follow-up on defects.
Participate in improving test engineering best practices, tools, infrastructures and processes.
Competitor/ Industry monitoring.
Collaborate with Marketing and Commercial teams to understand business needs as they relate to new technologies.
Support the Articulation of long-term product vision and Develop actionable strategies for early technology development as it pertains to the business and business drivers.
Develop and foster internal relationships with functional teams.
Develops products by identifying potential products; conducting market research; consumer research; generating product requirements; determining specifications, production timetables, pricing, and time-integrated plans for product introduction
Introduces new lens & frame products by coordinating with internal stakeholders.
Lead select product launches.
Tests and surveys new products, and incorporates feedback into product specification revision and training material.
Recommends the nature and scope of present and future product line evaluation and improvement.
Initiate & foster relationships with key vendors and development partners.
Acts as expert open-resource regarding optical technology.
Drive project planning, track timelines, milestones, objectives, and priorities for technology projects and provide regular updates to leadership.
Creates informational communications material including white-paper documents, and presentations.
Working with cross functional teams that include engineers, QA, supply chain, facilities, and other departments.
Working with technicians and assembly operators to develop robust manufacturing processes.
Writing manufacturing process documentation, protocols, test reports utilizing technical data (process work instructions, travelers, engineering study reports, etc.)
Formal and informal presentations on conventional and/or routine testing to a wide range of stakeholders.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of ophthalmic medical devices, technologies and regulatory landscape related to the company's products.
Manage and logically organize data to identify and describe problems and assess the suitability and quality of technical solutions.
Perform complaint, failure and risk management activities, develop mitigation and risk control strategies and generate supporting documentation.
Experience And Education Requirements
Required Qualifications
Previous direct involvement in Ophthalmic Medical Device product and/or technology development.
Experience in lens technology development or lens product go to market experience (product manager).
Proven track record of defining and launching commercially successful products, ideally in the optical field.
Acumen in ophthalmic technology product customer insights, communication and strategy.
Demonstrated ability to run self-directed projects, maintain timelines, transfer technology and execute projects in an early-stage technical environment.
Demonstrated ability to organize, analyze, and interpret data to generate insights and conclusions.
Demonstrated Ability to deal with ambiguity/uncertainty and a willingness to try new/challenging things.
Proficient in the use of engineering analysis and statistical analysis tools to design and evaluate product design, performance and reliability.
Proven ability to work hands-on and independently in a fast-paced environment.
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products.
Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline or ABOM, and a minimum of 5+ years optical experience through lab management or frame and lens development.
