Vice President, Medical Affairs – North America Ultragenyx is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company committed to developing novel therapies for the treatment of rare and ultra-rare genetic diseases. Position Summary:

This is a unique opportunity to join an innovative, development stage biotech company focused on developing life transforming therapies for patients with rare and ultra-rare disorders. Ultragenyx is looking for an experienced medical leader with the passion and creativity to develop great medicines for patients. The Vice President, Medical Affairs-North America will be responsible for the development and strategic oversight of the company’s pre- and post-approval activities. This individual will provide strategic direction and medical/scientific leadership, and will be accountable for developing, implementing, guiding and communicating the North America Medical Affairs strategy and activities for the for Ultragenyx across the portfolio either through direct or matrix reporting relationships. As a standing member of governance review committees such as the Medical Review Forum, she/he will be an essential contributor to strategic decision-making and resource allocation. Also, she/he will be a champion of Best-in-Class Medical Affairs practices and medical excellence, in line with the aspiration of Ultragenyx to become the best rare disease company in the world.

The ideal candidate will have experience in drug development, managing post-approval commitments, KOL development and successful record of accomplishment in patient community relationships. Experience in Rare Disease is considered a plus.

Responsibilities including, but not limited to: Lead and be accountable for the medical affairs strategy for all programs in North America and assure high quality execution of all medical affairs activities

Develop and implement the strategic direction

Build and lead physician teams who have responsibility to develop and execute medical affairs plans for their respective therapy areas

Strategic leadership of Medical Science Liaison (MSL) organization responsible for presenting medical information regarding company products to physicians and other healthcare professionals

Partner with the North America Commercial Field Force team in executing coordinated field team activity

Provide support for patient advocacy activities

Develop clear and effective GCP practices for the group

Utilizes medical/scientific, technical, and managerial experience to support research programs, clinical development programs and licensed product maintenance, including developing the strategy for Advisory Board and KOL meetings

Keeps abreast of current medical/scientific progress.

Provide Medical expertise to the Commercial organization as needed to assist in the development and execution of compliant commercial activities

Be an active, engaged partner at the Medical Affairs Leadership Team

Accountable for the design and oversight of corporate-sponsored medical affairs trials

Technical Requirements & Skills: M.D. required with minimum 12+ years in pharmaceutical industry in clinical drug development and/or Medical Affairs. Minimum 8+ years of managing and leading post-commercial medical teams

Working knowledge of drug therapy including pharmacology, toxicology, trial methodology and clinical pharmacology and an in depth knowledge and understanding of scientific principles for controlled trials

Experience with building and development effective relationships with key opinion leaders and external partnerships

Ability to build working relations throughout the organization and with business partners to achieve business goals

Knowledge of regulatory requirements for NDA submission is beneficial

Demonstrated ability to solve problems with innovative solutions along with strong organizational skills

Possess strong and dynamic leadership skills. Successful and superior influencing skills across all levels of the organization and external collaborators

Sound strategic evaluation, analysis, and decision-making skills

Able to handle pressure in a dynamic, fast paced environment

Impactful written and verbal scientific communication

Leadership Skills: Set & Achieve Goals: Understand business objectives and effectively translate them into strategies, while skillfully navigating obstacles and resistance to change.
